before joining the staff of the University of Tasmania, and in 1989 established CODES as a world leading ore deposit research centre. He is best known for his research on VMS deposits, but has also published extensively on sediment-hosted Zn-Pb, sediment-hosted gold and the use of pyrite geochemistry in ore genesis and exploration. Ross received the Lindgren Award from the Society of Economic Geologists in 1983 for research excellence. He was the Society of Economic Geologists Distinguished Lecturer in 1998, and was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 1999.
